Don’t Forget These Home Maintenance Tasks

Tasks like cleaning out your gutters, dusting and vacuuming your home, and weeding your garden come with regular, visible reminders. But how do you keep up with other seasonal maintenance chores that may not be as noticeable?

Here are some home maintenance tasks that help your home’s systems run efficiently, so don’t leave them off your to-do list.

Large Appliances

  • Clean out your dryer vent. Lint screens should be cleaned after each load of laundry, but the vent line itself needs a deeper clean at least once a year to prevent fire hazards.
  • Vacuum and wipe down the coils on the back of your refrigerator. Dusty coils make your fridge work harder and use more energy.
  • Change or clean the filters in your dishwasher, refrigerator, and range hood. Clogged filters reduce performance and can lead to costly repairs.

HVAC

  • Vacuum vents and clean out the ducts. Keep supply and return vents unobstructed by furniture or rugs for proper airflow.
  • Replace old air filters (at least every other month). In high-use seasons, check monthly and replace when dirty to maintain efficiency and indoor air quality.
  • Replace weatherstripping to reduce drafts. Inspect windows and doors for gaps; sealing them improves comfort and lowers heating costs in Grey County winters.
  • Test your thermostat. Confirm it’s working before peak heating or cooling seasons and consider upgrading to a programmable model for energy savings.

Plumbing

  • Flush the water heater. Sediment buildup reduces efficiency and shortens the unit’s lifespan; older units benefit from an annual flush.
  • Check for leaks by examining walls, ceilings, cabinets, and pipes. Look for stains, peeling paint, or damp spots that may signal hidden moisture problems.
  • If you have sprinklers, test the water pressure. In fall, drain sprinkler systems and outdoor faucets before freeze-up to prevent burst pipes.

Safety and Security

  • Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace the batteries if necessary. Do this at least twice a year (spring and fall is a good rhythm.)
  • Ensure your security alarms and codes are working. Verify that all sensors, keypads, and cameras are online and that access codes are up to date.
  • Inspect your fence and gate for holes or vulnerabilities. Repair loose boards, rusted hinges, or gaps that could compromise safety or invite pests.

Final Thoughts

Keep this checklist handy and review it at least once each season to help keep your home in good condition and your household safe. For Grey County homeowners, paying attention to seasonal shifts—like clearing eavestroughs before freeze-up and checking sump pumps after spring thaw—can prevent costly surprises.
